Bug Name: Internet Connection Setup with Proxies

Reported by: Jose C. Elias

Duration: Ever since the beginning of the Internet

Supplier: All

Alias:

Product: Mostly Operating Systems

Bug: Every time we connect a laptop to a new network, we have to reconfigure everything just to get an Internet connection. This plagues routers, firewalls, proxy servers, operating systems, and both wired and wireless networks.

Class of Error: “Can’t we agree on a standard?”

Principle: A user expects that if he/she connects a PC to a network, that it should have an Internet connection available

Proposed Fix: Have all vendors follow a standard for easy connectivity to the public internet without user intervention (well, maybe asking the user “do you want to connect to the public internet?”) and allowing whoever places the infrastructure to setup this capability.

Bug first observed: Ever since the first non-direct connection to the Internet was needed to be done.

Bug reported to suppliers: All the time.

Bug on list since: Jan 2005
